Are You Holding Your Breath While You Concentrate?

Intense concentration can change the way we breathe before we consciously notice it. Some people briefly hold their breath, while others breathe faster, more shallowly or with greater upper-body tension. The popular term “screen apnoea” describes the experience neatly. A simple breathing check can help release unnecessary tension and support calmer, more sustainable concentration.
Top Tips for Breath Control
- Notice before correcting – During a demanding task, briefly observe whether you are breathing freely. Awareness provides more useful information than immediately forcing a large breath.
- Check at predictable pressure points – Use the moment before sending an important email, answering a difficult message or beginning a complex calculation as your cue to notice your breath.
- Release the hidden bracing – Soften your jaw, lower your shoulders and relax your abdomen. Concentration often recruits more muscular tension than the task requires.
- Sit comfortably rather than rigidly – Support your back, place both feet on the floor and allow your chest and abdomen room to move. A military pose usually creates another form of tension.
- Let the exhale finish – If you notice a held breath, breathe out gently before taking the next comfortable inhale. Avoid gulping in an exaggerated recovery breath.
- Move between periods of focus – Stand, walk or stretch after sustained desk work. Movement changes both posture and attention while giving your breathing space to settle.
- Avoid monitoring every breath – Frequent checking can become distracting. Choose a few useful cues during the day and allow breathing to remain automatic between them.
- Treat unexplained breathlessness separately – Seek medical advice if breathing difficulty is new, worsening or occurring outside concentrated activity. Severe breathlessness or chest tightness requires urgent help.
You begin writing an important email. The wording needs to be careful, the recipient may challenge it and you want every sentence to land correctly. Your shoulders move slightly forwards. Your jaw tightens. You inhale as you begin composing the difficult paragraph, then realise several seconds later that the breath never quite came back out. The experience is surprisingly familiar.
It is sometimes called email apnoea or screen apnoea, terms used to describe breath-holding or shallow breathing during concentrated digital activity. There is no strong evidence that a fixed percentage of screen users experience the same pattern, and the term should not be confused with sleep apnoea or another diagnosed breathing disorder, but what the research does show, is that demanding mental activity can alter respiration.
In one study exploring possible interference in brain imaging, researchers found that unnoticed breath-holds lasting only three to six seconds could occur during task periods. Participants appeared particularly likely to pause their breathing near the beginning of a demanding task.
Other studies have found different responses. Cognitive load may increase breathing rate and lead to relative over-breathing rather than a complete pause. Researchers have also observed changes in respiratory variability, heart rate and gas exchange as mental demand rises. The precise response varies between people and between tasks.
A brief pause in breathing is not automatically harmful. We naturally coordinate respiration with speech, movement, anticipation and physical effort. You may briefly brace before lifting something heavy, making a precise movement or pressing a button at exactly the right moment.vThe difficulty appears when unnecessary bracing becomes part of sustained desk work. A tightly held abdomen, raised shoulders and a fixed upper body can leave the neck and chest feeling tense. The task may be entirely intellectual, yet the body behaves as though accuracy requires it to become a small statue.
Posture can add another layer. Studies comparing seated positions have found that slumped sitting can reduce aspects of respiratory function, including lung capacity, airflow and respiratory muscle performance. These experiments do not prove that every relaxed posture damages breathing, nor do they justify sitting bolt upright for eight hours. They show that the physical position of the trunk can change the space available for respiration.
A useful working position feels supported rather than rigid. Sit back in the chair, allow your feet to rest on the floor and give your lower ribs and abdomen room to move. Change position regularly instead of searching for one perfect arrangement and trying to preserve it indefinitely. That is key.
The simplest intervention is a short breath release: Pause at a natural break in the task; Let your shoulders drop; Relax your jaw and allow the abdomen to soften; Breathe out gently, without pushing, then allow the next inhale to arrive through the nose if that feels comfortable; Repeat for two or three unforced breaths before returning to the work.
The NHS recommends allowing the breath to move as deeply into the belly as feels comfortable, without forcing it, while breathing gently and regularly. A longer relaxation practice can continue for several minutes, although the concentration check described here can be much shorter.
The aim is not to maintain an ideal breathing pattern throughout the working day. Trying to supervise every inhale would soon become a second job, and probably a badly paid one.
Choosing cues that already exist can also be helpful. Check your breathing when a video meeting connects, before you press send, when a document takes an age to load or after you notice that a paragraph has required several attempts. A small visual marker beside the screen can help initially, although the cue should eventually become part of the working process rather than permanent desktop decoration.
You can also use the transition between tasks. Close the previous window, look away from the screen, exhale comfortably and allow one natural breath before beginning the next piece of work. This creates a physical boundary as well as a mental one.
Over time, you may notice that particular tasks produce a stronger response. Financial decisions may tighten the abdomen, difficult messages may raise the shoulders, precision work may produce brief pauses near the moment of action. That information reveals more than a generic instruction to “take a deep breath”.

Breathing awareness should feel reassuring rather than alarming. Occasional pauses during concentration are different from unexplained shortness of breath, persistent chest discomfort or difficulty breathing during normal activity. New or worsening breathlessness should be discussed with a healthcare professional, while severe difficulty breathing or a tight, heavy chest requires urgent medical help.
Your best concentration does not require holding yourself together with muscular force, so the next time you become absorbed in a demanding task, notice what your body has joined you in doing: Release the jaw; Soften the shoulders; Finish the breath; Then carry on thinking.
