Over the following hours, the body begins responding to what it has experienced. There is also no virtue in feeling permanently exhausted. Training needs enough challenge to ask the body for change, while leaving sufficient capacity to return and perform again. The useful question is whether the programme is developing capability over time, rather than whether each individual session leaves a dramatic physical souvenir.
Sleep Changes the Answer
The relationship between sleep and recovery becomes clear when sleep is removed. In a controlled study involving healthy young adults, one night of total sleep deprivation reduced post-meal muscle protein synthesis by 18% and shifted hormonal measures towards a less favourable environment for muscle maintenance. Total sleep deprivation is more severe than the disrupted night most people experience, and the study was small, so the result should be interpreted within those limits. It still demonstrates that the body’s response to food and activity can change when sleep is seriously compromised.
A poor night does not cancel a workout, although it may change what the next day requires. Heavy legs, reduced concentration and unusually high effort can justify lowering the load, shortening the session or replacing intensity with gentler movement. This is intelligent adjustment rather than lost discipline.
